REVIEW:
Cornering the pizza market. Detroit style pizza is having a moment and Cobble Hill’s Nate’s Detroit Pizza is one of the reasons why. This pop-up pizzeria in a vacated catering storefront with hardly any signage follows the lead of Emmy’s Squared, Ace’s, and La Rose who are following the lead of Jet’s, Buddy’s and a host of other Motown originals that seem to indicate that Detroit pizza has arrived in the Big Apple - and is here to stay. In addition to the characteristic square slices with fried brick cheese (frico) edges, Nate’s pizzas get plenty of post oven attention including basil, grated cheese and olive oil. These enhancements combined with the high quality ingredients and satisfying taste more than justify the price. Though seemingly thin, the density also make these crisp squares more filling than a typical New York slice. The basic components are of such a high caliber that I recommend ordering a fresh pie with just cheese or pepperoni and then try a slice or two of the creative concoctions like the Hot Honey Hawaiian or the Vodka. As a sauce lover, I would also suggest ordering extra sauce since reheating tends to dry out any pre-made slice and Detroit style is known for its sauciness. If you aren’t lucky enough to live or work in the area, make yourself comfortable and grab one of the smattering of seats in the eating area but not too comfortable as there are no on site public restrooms. The word is out on Nate’s Detroit Pizza. While this pop-up continues to operate, Nate’s Detroit Pizza has already opened up a brick and mortar shop in nearby Carroll Gardens. Hopefully a Nate’s will open up near me!
