DAY 7: OCTOBER 7th, 2023

LOCATION: La Rose Pizza (150 Smith St, Brooklyn, NY 11201)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Shaun Farrugia, Yvette King

ORDER: 1 slice of Jane (cheese blend, sauce, pecorino, and basil), 1/2 slice of Tom Green (Cheese blend, cremini mushroom, caramelized onion, smoked mozzarella, ricotta, pesto, black pepper, lemon zest and pecorino), 1 slice of Lucia (cheese blend, sauce, pepperoni, burrata, pesto, Calabrian chili honey and pecorino)

REVIEW:
Fried cheese, please! When chef Andrew Halitski opened the doors to Cobble Hill's La Rose Pizza in August 2023, he not only fulfilled an American dream but he also gave his Brooklyn neighbors some spectacular Detroit style pizza. Like Ace's did in Williamsburg a few years prior, La Rose is taking the Motown style to the next level. After spending years scouring the internet to perfect his methods and recipes in his own home kitchen for his wife and two kids, Halitski was ready to make it for the rest of us. Thank goodness he did. His frico (fried cheese) edges - the cornerstone of the Detroit style - have the perfect crisp consistency and depth to both optimize the taste as well as support the other high quality toppings. Whether you opt for a simple sauce-and-cheese Jane or a more complex signature pie like burrata, pepperoni, and hot honey infused Lucia, you won't be disappointed. I particularly love the generous amount of Bianco DiNapoli savory cooked tomato sauce ladled on top of the red pizzas post oven. Since its not sold by the slice, the pies might seem expensive but considering they are cut into four filling slices and the quality of the product, I think it's more than reasonable. There aren't many seats in the cozy dining area so I recommend going at off peak times or taking it to go. I, for one, can't wait to go back to La Rose.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Sean Taylor, Robin Rothman, Yvette King, Shaun Farrugia

1. Yvette King knows a lot about keeping turkeys as pets.

2. Shaun Farrugia has new luggage.

3. Robin Rothman likes nut stores and has Halva to prove it.

4. I've recently started playing a video game called Fortnite. I'm hooked. So is my brother. He even bought me an early birthday present: an Xbox so I could play on a better platform (and with a keyboard and mouse). The Xbox arrived today.

5. I got to meet Andrew Halitski who opened up his pizzeria (La Rose) in August 2023, hails from Toronto, and has two young babies. He used to make pizza for his family as a weekly tradition and, thankfully for the rest of us, decided to make it for others as well.
