DAY 8: OCTOBER 8th, 2023

LOCATION: Lala's Brooklyn Apizza (990 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211)

GUEST(S): Michael McLarnon

ORDER: 1/2 of a Red pie (Tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, pecorino, olive oil + add mozzarella), 1/2 of a Clam pie (Local little neck clams, mozzarella, garlic, Physica Riesling butter sauce, fresh parsley), 1/2 of a Hot Pepperoni pie (House fermented tomato sauce, pepperoni, serrano chilis, honey)

REVIEW:
The perfect pairing. After eating at East Williamsburg's Lala's Brooklyn Apizza, I know a higher power exists and home brewing-and-baking power couple Joe and Lauren Grimm have harnessed it. First they open up a brewery featuring highly acclaimed beer and now a pizzeria upstairs churning out some of the best wood-fired pizza in the city.  Using the same house-milled malted wheat they use for the beer, the Grimms sought to create a wood-fired version of New Haven style tomato pies they adored earlier in life. And they succeeded! Much like Sally's Apizza, Lala's tomato pies are served on cookie sheets without mozzarella ("mootz") unless you add it as a topping. The crust is ultra thin, crisp, and charred to perfection. Also, similar to the New Haven pizza institutions, Lala's pizza tastes superb. Yes, they have a clam pie and yes you should order it. Over order since a hungry pizza-loving human can easily eat more than one of these "impossibly thin" masterpieces. I only wish they were bigger! Before you go, check the hours, as they are irregular; the weather, if you want to enjoy the spacious outdoor terrace; and your wallet, as these premium pizzas come at a premium price. And don't forget to pair your pizza with a Grimm beverage at the bar that was brewed downstairs. Lala's Brooklyn Apizza might just be the secret to happiness.

3. We are all competing for the Ronnie Ortiz Trophy. Ronnie was an incredible athlete and beloved member of the Williamsburg softball community before he became a tragic victim of violence in a case of mistaken identity.
