REVIEW:
Authentic Italian on the Malecon. Amidst the myriad of restaurants along the Malecon (the pedestrian walkway that lines the Bay) in Mexico's Puerto Vallarta there is but one Italian institution: La Dolce Vita. According to my cab driver, some Italian tourists visited the area over twenty five years ago and decided to stay and live “the sweet life.” They brought with them their Italian recipes, cooking techniques, and a profound love of Puerto Vallarta. And who can blame them? The Malecon, in particular, is situated in the heard of downtown, surrounded by shops, cafes, clubs, bars, and some of the best Mexican food in the world. The owners of La Dolce Vita must have seen a lack of great Italian cuisine and committed to filling the void. With three branches in the region they have since filled even more voids. Fortunately, one of the items on the menu is pizza. Baked in a wood oven, the thin crusted personal sized pies feature signature pizzas with both traditional and local flavors. The Frutti di Mare (fruit of the sea) pizza combines conventional tomato sauce and a stringy mozzarella cheese with locally caught seafood like shrimp and octopus. These exotic local toppings are also offered in an assortment of other Italian dishes on the menu that looked amazing on other patron's tables. Do not limit yourself to the pizza. If you are visiting from the United States, you will find it is quite affordable to indulge on even the more expensive items. Once you visit La Dolce Vita, you too will be living "the sweet life."
