DAY 5: OCTOBER 5th, 2024

LOCATION: Twin Star Orchards (155 N Ohioville Rd, New Paltz, NY 12561)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Scott Benjamin

ORDER: 2 slices of Dragon Breath (San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, chorizo, sweet onions, cilantro, jalapeño, Mike’s Hot Honey, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, crushed red pepper), 2 slices of Margherita (San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, aged Parmigiano Reggiano), 1 slice of 3 Mushroom White (fresh mozzarella, onions, rosemary, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle oil)

REVIEW:
The pizza in the cider house rules! Thanks to Twin Star Orachards in New Paltz, New York, you can spend the day apple picking, drinking cider, and eating Neapolitan pizza. And that's exactly what we did! Get your order in early because as fast as the pizza baking crew are at prepping the pies, the demand during peak apple season is insane. We waited 75 minutes before our pies were ready but boy were they tasty. I recommend the spicy and creative Dragon Breath. The combination of the chorizo, jalapeños, and hot honey provide a memorable kick but you can't go wrong with the traditional Margherita either. Made in the authentic Naples style with hand-crafted crust, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese in a wood-fired oven, you'll swear you've been teleported to Italy. The only additional flavor you may taste might be the abundance of cornmeal on the underside and outer edge used to facilitate transferring of the dough onto the pizza peel and into the oven. Twin Star Orchards makes great pies - and I'm not just talking about apple pies.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Sean Taylor, Robin Rothman, Scott Benjamin

1. I knew Scott Benjamin has an improv comedian in NYC but Scott Benjamin is also a professional magician and juggler. In the 1980's, he once did a birthday party at Shea stadium at a child's birthday party that included Sean Lennon - then he drove him home!

2. Robin Rothman and I took the Trailways bus from Port Authority to New Paltz to do some apple picking. We came back with a peck of apples of the following varieties: Honeycrisp, Fuji, Northern Spy, and Jonagold.

3. During the lockdown in 2020, Scott Benjamin and his wife (an artist) collaborated on a comic strip called Quarantine Qomix. This one: https://quarantine-qomix.weebly.com/qq5.html is one of my favorite
