DAY 24: OCTOBER 24th, 2023
LOCATION: Funzi's Pizzeria (36 St Marks Pl, New York, NY 10003)
GUEST(S): Chano Garcia, Jon Monje
ORDER: 2 slices of cheese, 1/2 slice of pepperoni, 1/2 slice of Burrata
REVIEW:
Premium slice in a premium spot. With the mere opening of Funzi’s Pizzeria in the East Village, the caliber of pizza available on St. Mark’s street has gone up a notch. The care given to every component of each slice becomes clear after just one bite. Note the even distribution of dough creating a uniformly thin and satisfyingly crisp underside sturdy enough to support the weight of toppings. These also evenly-distributed toppings consist of high quality ingredients. I was a particular fan of the Burrata slice which was applied after the bake to a savory tomato sauce base that would be one of my favorites even without the Burrata. Every Funzi’s slice comes surrounded by a puffy slightly gas oven kissed (slight char) outer edge that not only provides a flavorful crunch but also folds nicely if you want to take your slice to go. But stay, if you want. In such a prime Manhattan location, I was amazed to see a decent sized seating area indoors and out. I recommend getting a slice of plain, a slice of the tomato and another non-traditional slice like the Burrata just for Funzi’s!
