REVIEW:
Mom and Pop slice shop. Named after their eldest daughter, Philomena’s in Sunnyside, Queens is a family business in all the best ways. While their daughter takes your order at the counter, owner Dave Acoccella makes and bakes your pizza while his wife June slices it and brings it to you. And did I mention that Dave is a pizza master? Philomena’s makes one of the best slices not just in Queens but in all of NYC. His commitment to the product from his 90+ hour fermented dough, sourcing of high quality mozzarella and grated cheeses, application of just the right amount of tomato sauce would be enough but he goes the extra distance with the basil and olive oil drizzle as a finishing touch that take a Philomena’s slice to the next level. And this is just the plain slice! The square is also a sight to behold and a tasted to be-eaten. I recommend one of each. Residents of Sunnyside and anyone near the 7 train, I’ll meet you in the cozy dining area of Philomena’s.
