REVIEW:
Pennsylvania pie. A comprehensive study (anytimeestimate) reveals that, at one per every 6,500th resident, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has the highest number of pizza restaurants per capita. However, there another town in the Keystone state that has 10 times as many (one per every 650 people) named Old Forge. The town of just over 8,500 is the self-proclaimed "pizza capital of the world” and with good reason. Main Street is dotted with multiple-story houses-turned businesses most of which are pizzerias dating back to the early 1900’s. Neighboring towns in the Wyoming Valley from Wilkes-Barre to Scranton descend upon Old Forge each night and weekend for their characteristic thick square “cuts” - not slices- of Red and White Pizza. Pizza staff and crew from competing pizzerias know and are often even related to each other. The result is, literally, one big happy family of people churning out pizza in a way similar yet unlike anywhere else. At Revello’s, the secret cheese blend includes a salty American cheese and a nostalgic tangy tomato sauce not unlike school cafeteria lunch pizza of my youth. Revello’s has a huge indoor dining area, bar, kid’s game room, and an outdoor tent out back. The long-tenured courteous staff is an endearing charm in addition to a testament to the longevity of the pizza parlor. I admire the towns’s commitment to their product and now fully recognize Old Forge style of pizza as yet another unique pizza style in a country lucky enough to have so many.
