Exterior

Interior

DAY 13: OCTOBER 13th, 2019

LOCATION: Roseland Apizza (350 Hawthorne Ave, Derby, CT 06418)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Jen MacNeil Danenberg, Kevin Danenberg, Clara

ORDER: 2 slices of a small Roseland Special (mozzarella, mushrooms and sausage), 3 slices of a small plain tomato sauce and grated cheese with garlic

REVIEW:
A pizza oasis. Coastal Connecticut towns such as New Haven, West Haven, Fairfield, and Stamford are well known for their pizza institutions, but you have to go inland to find one that has been there all along.  Derby's Roseland Apizza might look like a suburban two story house aside a country road, but it is so much more.  Since 1935, the kitchen has been churning out some of the best apizza (uh-beetz) in the area. The menu and happy patrons reveal that Roseland is more than a mere pizzeria, but don't leave without at least trying a small plain tomato sauce and grated cheese pie. It neither small nor plain. Over the decades, Roseland's sourcing of ingredients and masterful baking technique have resulted in maximizing flavor of the basic components.  Anything else is bonus. The rich tomato sauce spread to the outer edge and savory Pecorino Romana cheese rest upon the signature thin crust like a blank pizza canvas awaiting toppings ranging from mozzarella cheese to lobster. Add garlic for no extra charge! Expect to dig deeper into your wallet the more exotic you get with the other toppings. Since Roseland is more than just a pizzeria, I recommend getting a simple pie and ordering the exotic stuff, like the shrimp and arugula salad, on the side.  Whatever you end up ordering, you can't go wrong when you eat at Roseland Apizza.
