Day 20, 2021: Angelo's Coal Oven Pizzeria (Midtown, NYC)

DAY 20: OCTOBER 20th, 2021

LOCATION: Angelo's Coal Oven Pizzeria (117 W 57th St, New York, NY 10001)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Jeremy Rothman

ORDER: 2 slices of Old Fashion Round Pie with pepperoni

REVIEW:
Practice, practice, pizza. Across 57th street from Carnegie Hall is a coal fired pizzeria called Angelo’s Pizza. It’s owned by the same extended family that owns Patsy’s Pizzeria, Nick's, and Adrienne's (thanks Brooks Jones for the family tree). Fortunately, Angelo's produces an uncanny facsimile of a coal-fired Patsy’s pizza. This is a good thing! Patsy’s is delicious but there aren’t any between Central Park and Times Square. There is an Angelo’s though (two actually). So if you are looking for a classic New York style pizza in the Midtown Manhattan vicinity, Angelo’s has got you covered. I recommend the large Old School Round pie with pepperoni. I think Angelo’s hand cut spicy pepperoni is among the best in the business. The high heat of the oven singes the edges creating a pepperoni cup effect that adds just the right amount of zest to the melted fresh mozzarella, savory tomato sauce, and sweet post-oven basil.  Whatever toppings you get, expect them on a lightly charred thin-yet-sturdy coal oven crust - a signature of the classic New York style pizza. In addition to pizza, Angelo's menu lists everything from salads and starters to desserts and after dinner drinks. It's convenient, reasonably priced, family-friendly, date-worthy, and now even has outdoor seating in addition to two floors of dining rooms.  You can go to Angelo's Pizza on your way to Carnegie Hall or instead of Carnegie Hall - either way, you won't be disappointed.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Sean, Jeremy, Robin
1. Jeremey Rothman is Robin Rothman's first cousin.  He was in town with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He STILL plays baseball and I bet he's better than he claims to be.

2. After pizza, Robin Rothman and I went across the street to see the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. It was an amazing performance of Beethoven's 4th and 6th's symphonies.
