REVIEW:
Texas time capsule. Campisi’s Egyptian Restaurant is everything from Texas’s first pizzeria to the infamous Dallas institution that served Jack Ruby his last supper as a free man. It is not, however, an Egyptian restaurant. That name came with the joint. By 1950, the increasing demand for Carlo “Papa” Campisi’s thin-crusted tavern style pizza pies prompted the move to the larger Egyptian Lounge location but not enough initial capital to change the name. Over sixty years later, the spacious darkened dining room with big cushioned booths, full bar, mellow music, and hidden “card room” make the storied ambiance alone worth the visit. Split some buttery crab claws and an elliptical-shaped, party-cut, Midwest-style pizza topped with creamy melted mozzarella for a night to remember. I recommend the spicy pepperoni which meshes perfectly with the cheese and herb-infused rich tomato sauce. Campisi’s Egyptian Restaurant may not serve Egyptian food but they do serve my favorite parts of the food pyramid.

2. In between feasts of Tex Mex, pizza and steak, Robin Rothman managed to find time to rock her first Dallas Open Mic at the Opening Bell.
