Day 20, 2025: Valerie's Home Pizza (Statesville, NC)

DAY 20: OCTOBER 20th, 2025

LOCATION: Valerie's Pizza (Statesville, NC)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Valerie Corbett, William Corbett, Ellie, Junie, Winnie

ORDER: 2 slices of Pepperoni, Jalapeño, Green Pepper, 3 slices of Cheese & Cherry Tomato

REVIEW:
Home pizza routine! My baby sister, Valerie, comes from the same pizza-obsessed family. Now that she has babies of her own, she's passing along the obsession in the best way possible: a weekly homemade pizza night. What started as a simple “takeout pizza night” has turned into a full-blown home pizzeria operation. These days, Valerie ferments her own dough, simmers her own sauce, and even grows her own toppings just a few steps from the kitchen. She credits Scott Wiener, my pizza guest from earlier in the month, for developing an award-winning "beer dough" recipe that Valerie knows by heart.  Every week, Valerie customizes each pie to match her family’s unique palates and dietary quirks — including a lactose-free version for one of her daughters. With basil, peppers, and jalepenos grown meters away from the kitchen, Valerie has optimized the backyard to table pipeline. And she has to! Timing is everything in her kitchen. The kids eat first, then while her husband handles bedtime duty, the adults start topping their pies on the peel so Valerie can launch them on to the baking steel in the conventional oven for a 8-10 minute bake/broil. Out pops delicious pizza every time. Valerie is just the kind of friend you want to make but, lucky for me, she's already family!

2. While roasting marshmallows for s'mores in the fire pit, Robin Rothman had the idea of shoving the chocolate directly in the freshly toasted marshmallow. #gamechanger

3. Ellie loves animals and is going horseback riding tomorrow.

4. Junie taught us the "5 pumpkins" song and its accompanying motions.

5. Winnie likes to mimic Junie and also taught us the "5 pumpkins" song but her lyrics only mentioned two of the pumpkins.
