Day 14, 2013: Lucali (Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn)

DAY 14: OCTOBER 14th, 2013

LOCATION: Lucali (575 Henry St, Brooklyn, NY)

ORDER: 1 slice of Mark Special Pie, 1 slice of Red Pepper, 1 slice of Pepperoni, Onion

GUEST(S): Katie Nelson-Croner, Ali Davis, Tony Carnevale, Alexis Saarela, Terry Jinn

REVIEW:
The best just keeps getting best-er.  Lucali owner and chef Mark Iacono has cracked the code on the perfect pizza and, fortunately, shares it with others on every single pie that exits his wood-fired brick oven.  In full sight of his patrons, Mark casually-yet-quickly rolls out the 14"-16" dough, gently applies the heated seasoned tomato sauce, then layers on the high quality toppings before expertly placing them in the closely monitored oven.  Less than two minutes later, the pie exits fully and evenly cooked with hints of charring that give each masterpiece a unique touch.  The artist signs his work with an olive oil and fresh cut basil garnish.    All of the component parts synthesize into an unrivaled pie.  If his pies were not being fast-tracked into the stomachs of the satisfied customers of his quaint, dimly lit BYOB dining area, they'd belong in a gallery. There's good reason why Jay-Z, Beyonce, and I agree that Lucali is the best pizza we've ever had.

BREAKING NEWS: Not only is there another Lucali already opened in Miami, Florida, but Mark has his sites on the Los Angeles area.  Lucky them!

MISCELLANEOUS:

1. Ali Davis and Alexis Saarela are both from Minnesota.  Both agree that Minneapolis is the better looking of the twin cities (sorry, St. Paul).
2. Katie Nelson-Croner dressed as dalek from Dr. Who at the most recent Comicon.  She made her own costume and it looked just about as good as possible considering dalek is an evil floating robot.
3. Terry Jinn consumed a creative grape beverage at the Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain with his dessert.  It reminded me of his Beverage of the Day journal he started back in 2002.  It was indirectly responsible for the 31 Days of Pizza blog.
4. Tony Carnevale organized this pizza eating extravaganza and he and Ali even walked Katie and I to the subway train where we said, "good bye" and proceeded to get on the train going the wrong direction.  My bad.  I've only had 14 years to learn this subway system so cut me some slack!

Have you tried Johnny's Pizza in Mt. Vernon? Their pies are pristine.
