Day 4, 2021: Peperino (Lincoln Square, NYC)

DAY 4: OCTOBER 4th, 2021

LOCATION: Peperino (21 West End Ave, New York, NY 10023)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Jacob Horn

ORDER: 2 slices of plain cheese, 1/3 of a slice of grandma, 1/3 of a slice of pepperoni

REVIEW:
Throwback slice shop to throw back slices. Tucked between Lincoln Square and the West Side Highway you'll find a neighborhood pizzeria called Peperino.  It has all of the markings of a traditional pizzeria with the red neon signs, a decent-sized dining area, hand-written menu board, glass enclosed slice options, and steel gas-powered deck ovens but with one exception: it's clean.  It's shocking because the extra-large slices have all of the taste of a classic New York City pizzeria but without the years of accumulated muck and grime. This is because Peperino is new.  It opened in the middle of 2019 but it is as spotless as if it opened yesterday. While they may be new to the business, Peperino is more than familiar with the industry. The top quality ingredients, cooking techniques, and ambitious recipes position this pizzeria well to becoming an institution. They have already mastered the cheese combinations and the different tomato sauces, it won't be long before Peperino has conquered it all.  My favorite slice was the savory-with-just-enough-spice pepperoni followed closely by the brilliantly seasoned grandma. It may be a bit off the beaten path but Peperino is worth the trip.
