DAY 24: OCTOBER 24th, 2015

LOCATION: Fong's Pizza (223 4th Street Des Moines, IA 50309)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman

ORDER: 1/2 of a 10" Crab Rangoon (Crab rangoon base, surimi, green onion, asiago, mozzarella, crispy wontons and sweet chili sauce), 1/2 of a 10" Iowan (House bbq sauce, Canadian bacon, bacon, pulled pork, corn, mozzarella), 2 slices of a Taco (Chipotle black bean sauce, taco meat, onion, jalapeno, corn, cheddar, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, cilantro, taco chips. Served with sides of taco sauce and sour cream)

REVIEW:
Chic and uniquely antique.  In 2009, the owners of Fong's renamed and revitalized the remains of the oldest Chinese restaurant in Des Moines to create an Asian inspired pizzeria like no other. Crab Rangoon, sesame chicken, pulled pork, and teriyaki beef are not the typical toppings you might find on your average midwest tavern style thin crust. This is just the beginning of Fong's vast list of "headliner" signature pies including everything from the Bacon Cheeseburger to the Vegan Surprise. The taco has so many ingredients, the sour cream and taco sauce come on the side! If you're in the mood for a non-traditional pizza, Fong's has you covered.  I am particularly fond of the Iowan which comes with pulled pork, two different types of bacon, and corn. A lot of thought has gone into making these high quality topping combinations and the result is a lot of satisfied customers.  Pair your pie with one of the creative cocktails served in kitschy tiki glasses for a one of a kind dining experience. I can't wait to come back and try everything on the menu!

MISCELLANEOUS:
Robin Rangoon
1. Robin Rothman and I happened upon the house used in Grant Wood's American Gothic painting while driving through Eldon, Iowa.  So, we did what most folks do and posed for it.  See if you can tell which one is the original and which one is ours...

2. Des Moines has a cool sculpture garden named after the benefactors John and Mary Pappajohn - no relation to Papa John Schnatter.

3. Truth be told, when you're driving through Iowa, there are an awful lot of cornfields.
