REVIEW:
When in Un-Rome...Unregular Pizza burst onto the pizza scene in response to the COVID-19 pandemic with its rather irregular bartering business model. Social media went nuts for the inventive and endearing things people were willing to trade for a slice of owner Gabriele Lamonaca's pizza. Now, in addition to art and food, Unregular Pizza also accepts money at their East Village brick and mortar location. The primarily take-out and delivery slice joint boasts over a dozen pizzas each with a unique name and even more unique topping combinations. Try to secure a spot to eat perhaps in nearby Union Square park as many of the slices are so jam-packed with toppings, they aren't very portable. A native Roman himself, Lamonaca hopes his ability to create innovative Roman style pizza might fill a gap in the New York City pizza market.  Based on my experience, I think he’s on to something. Topping combinations from butternut squash and pancetta to meatballs to brocolli rabe and the list goes on.  All of these concoctions come on a flavorful 72 hour fermented square crust.  Although I liked them all, my favorite was the Burrapizza Cafonata which sports spicy pepperoni, 'nduja sauce, hot honey and did I mention the full ball of burrata cheese? Sure, it nearly doubled the cost but it makes for the most delicious and most Instagramable experience. Yes, this is the first time I paid more than $10 for a slice but, then again, I could have traded for it.
