Day 29, 2020: Aurelio's (Las Vegas, NV)

exterior

DAY 29: OCTOBER 29th, 2020

LOCATION: Aurelio's (6010 W Craig Rd #150, Las Vegas, NV 89130)

GUEST(S): Robin Rothman, Lily Rothman, Paul Rothman, Armando Diaz

ORDER: 5 pieces of large thin with sausage and extra sauce

REVIEW:
Perfect 10, Chicago thin. It should come as no surprise that Aurelio's makes a model version of Chicago thin pizza since Aurelio's has been helping to define the style for over 60 years. A trademark Chicago thin pizza pie is round but cut into squares as opposed to slices.  It's the opposite of deep-dish. Since 1959, Joe Aurelio's family pizzeria has been perfecting its recipe so that it is crisp but not cracker-y and sturdy enough to support the generous amount of cheese and high quality toppings distributed upon it. Early on is also when Joe started using homemade sausage instead of pre-cooking it. If you eat meat, definitely get the sausage. I also encourage you to get it "well done with extra sauce" for golden baked cheese on a sweet bed of tomato sauce that is so good, they mention "It's the sauce" on every box. Judging by the fact there are well over 30 locations from Vegas to Florida, the word is out on Aurelio's. Some people travel the country to visit every baseball park, I'd like to do that with every Aurelio's.

1. Armando is from Chicago - very near the original location of Aurelio's. He first ate Aurelio's pizza when he was in grade school and has loved it ever since. For Pizza Month, he ordered it from the store so we could eat it "together from 2,000 miles apart."

2. We brought our own plates, napkins and drinks anticipating a search for a nearby park for a picnic.  Turns out, the strip mall where Auerlio's is located has several outdoor picnic tables meaning that we ate 15 feet away from the door to the pizzeria.

Day 28, 2020: Hungry Howie's (Las Vegas, NV)

exterior

DAY 28: OCTOBER 28th, 2020

LOCATION: Hungry Howie's (4045 S Buffalo Dr Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89147)

GUEST(S): Amy Taylor, Jay Taylor, Lauren

ORDER: 3.5 slices of extra sauce, three cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan) with butter cheese flavored thin crust

REVIEW:
Hits the spot without leaving a dent. Hungry Howie's became one the largest pizza chains in the country by offering a quality product at a great price. I have a nostalgic place in my heart for this particular chain having grown up eating it and eventually working at one. But that sentimental favoritism doesn't extend to the newer offerings such as the thin crust.  While I felt less guilty eating the thin-yet-sturdy style, the mouth-memory didn't kick in until I got to the butter-parmesan flavored outer-edge. Consistent with my memory, Hungry Howie's does not skimp when it comes to toppings. I had three different cheeses and extra sauce and this may have resulted in an incomplete bake. I do admire that the pizza chain continues to innovate. Heck, the online ordering and tracking system is lightyears better than what we used in the late 90's and we were the ones making the pizzas! Hungry Howie's also gives back. The pink boxes are to raise money and awareness about breast cancer. Even now, during this pandemic, they are raising money to help in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. Considering the quantity of food, the prices including everyday deals are still among the best in the business. Have a soccer team to feed? huge family? a huge family of soccer teams? Hungry Howie's has you covered.

1. Lauren has an economics test tomorrow. I was trying to help her but I forgot everything.

2. Apparently my mother-in-law's phone was left on the hood of the car I drove to pick up the pizza. This was discovered a half an hour after my return.  Fortunately, the phone had been knocked off as I was leaving the driveway and I didn't run over it on my way back in. #whew  Jay once drove across the state of Florida (from Tampa to Daytona) with his phone and keys on his back bumper.  They lasted on the bumper the entire trip.
